Background music belongs to a dichotomy wherein all music is generalized into “Foreground” music and “Background” music.
Foreground music commands the audience’s full attention. Foreground music determines exactly and entirely what the audience will pay attention to, and when. Generally, foreground music is the primary reason an audience is present in the music venue at all, e.g. attending a concert.
Background music serves the passage of time, while the audience’s attention is focused elsewhere. Background music is designed to complement any activity that the audience is engaged in, at all times. Generally, background music is secondary to the primary reason(s) that the audience is present in the venue, e.g. socializing at a nightclub.
